The Origins of Jamboree on the Air

In 1957, Scout Leader and amateur radio operator Leslie Mitchell G3BHK had a simple but inspiring idea. He recognised that amateur radio could bring Scouts together from around the world without the need for long-distance travel. His vision became Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), enabling young people to meet, make friends and share their scouting experiences over the airwaves.

Since those early days, JOTA has grown well beyond its original concept. Alongside amateur radio, the event now incorporates a range of technology-based activities, introducing young people to radio communications, electronics and digital technologies while encouraging learning, teamwork and international friendship.

Nearly 70 years later, Jamboree on the Air has become the world's largest Scout & Guide event. Despite its growth and the introduction of new technologies, its original purpose remains unchanged—to connect young people across the globe, fostering friendship, understanding and communication through the shared spirit.
