For most your pathway into amateur radio begins with the Foundation Qualification, the entry-level qualification in Australia, consisting of;

  • Basic radio theory
  • Operating procedures
  • Safety
  • ACMA regulations
  • Practical operation of a radio

Your Foundation qualification gives access to popular HF, VHF and UHF bands, 10 watts power output, analogue and digital modes. No prior technical knowledge required, just some self study, then attend SGARS training and assessment weekend. If you can use a computer or smart device, then you can obtain the foundation level qualification.

Step 1- Check the Education calendar for next Foundation Training and Assessment weekend and register your enrolment.

Step 2 - Undertake self-study. Resource information available here

Step 3 - Attend the training and assessment weekend, apply for your qualification certificate and call sign.

Step 4 - Get on the air.
